1. Go for a walk.
Walking has been shown to be one of the best kinds of exercise there is. It helps your cardiovascular system and helps to prevent a range of different illnesses, including heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.

Start out with a 10 to 15 minute stroll around the neighborhood or to the store. That’s all you need to do. See if you can continue with the brief walks and then gradually begin walking a little further.

2. Do something you enjoy.
If you do a physical activity that you like, you are much more likely to stick with it. Whether it’s tennis, racquetball, volleyball, golf, hiking, or swimming. Find something that you like to do.

3. Be consistent
Schedule your workout, preferably at the same time each day. This will help to ensure that you do it.

4. Do what you can
If you do not have the time to get in an hour-long workout, exercise for however long that you can, even if only for 15 or 20 minutes. Every little bit helps.

5. Make goals
You should write down short-term, medum-term and long-term goals for your exercise regimen. Short term goals would cover things like what you will do each day. Medium-term goals would cover something that you want to accomplish by the end of the month, and long-term goals would cover a year or more.

6. Don’t overdo it
You are not going to train like an Olympian the first time out. Do only what you can, what feels comfortable and build up from there.

How to Maintain Self-Discipline

There are many different strategies and approaches that people have recommended for reaching goals and achieving success on the job. But beneath all of these techniques, there is a fundamental requirement. That is self-discipline.

Nothing else works if you do not have the self-discipline to do what you need to. Many people think of self-discipline as similar to a muscle, something that you can develop with practice. But just like a muscle, if you are out of shape, if your muscle is flabby from lack of use, you cannot expect a lot from it until you build it up.

Self-discipline is what enables you to put your ideas into action. It is the ability to act on your thoughts. It is the foundation on which everything else rests.

Little by Little

If you want to develop self-discipline, it will take time. Don’t expect to tackle something big right away if you have not developed your self-discipline. Because, as mentioned, self-discipline is like a muscle. It needs to be developed gradually.

So, don’t attempt to immediately try some heavy lifting. For example, you may make a New Year’s resolution of going to the gym every day. But if you have been a couch potato up to this point, you are only setting yourself up for failure.

So, start small and build up. You could, for example, begin with a short walk each day or every other day. Then add a few exercises to it, such as pushups and sit ups. And continue advancing from there until you reach your goal of daily gym workouts.

Make sure that you record what you do as well, so you can see your progress.

1. Take up a creative hobby
If you are swamped with work, you may feel that you don’t have time for a hobby. But studies have shown that a hobby requiring creativity helps to enhance performance at work. It could be something like playing a musical instrument, drawing or painting, writing, or playing some kind of game. The creative energies that are released for your hobby will carry over into your work. These kinds of hobbies also help you to reduce stress from your job.

2. Do work that you are interested in
This may be easier on some jobs than others. But research supports the common sense idea that you are likely to perform better at a task that you find interesting than on one you do not. Diversity Programs — What Works and What Does Not

Many companies these days have diversity initiatives. But recently their effectiveness has come into question.

Some researchers contend that such programs are not really increasing diversity. Companies are using the same methods they have been following for years, which often create more problems than they solve.

And statistics seem to support the claim. From 1985 to 2014, the number of women and minorities hired by companies with more than 100 employees has barely changed. The number of women and blacks in management ranks barely changed during that time as well.

Not only that, such initiatives seem to be having unintended consequences as well – making white men feel besieged. White men interviewing at companies that tout diversity expect that they will receive more unfair treatment and experience more discrimination.

Why They Don’t Work

Diversity programs seem to break down for several reasons. One is that companies require employees to participate. Making these programs mandatory creates anger and resistance among workers, making them feel more hostile to people of different backgrounds.

Another is that companies use heavy-handed tactics, such as warnings and threats against those who discriminate. A third reason is that employees tend to forget what they have learned in diversity training sessions very quickly.

What Does Work

To really encourage diversity, companies need to make such efforts voluntary. People show a greater willingness to participate under such circumstances. One way of introducing diversity in a more relaxed manner is through a mentoring program. Assigning younger minority employees to more senior mentors has been proven to increase diversity. Such efforts increase the diversity of management by nine to 24 percent.

Another way to increase diversity is simply by exposing people of different racial, cultural or ethnic backgrounds to each other and having them work together. This helps to break down the stereotypes that people have of others of a different background.

Yet another way of increasing diversity is holding people accountable socially. For example, at one company, black employees in some departments received smaller raises than white employees even though the black workers had the same performance ratings as their white counterparts. The company then began publicly listing employees’ performance ratings and pay raises, which showed those departments that discriminated. This was very effective in ending the discrepancy in pay increases.

How to Handle Presentation Anxiety

Much of the advice about giving presentations centers around reducing the stress and anxiety that such an event brings about. And this advice deals generally with what you can do to psychologically prepare yourself, things like breathing, visualizing your performance, and mentally rehearsing.

But there are other things you can do as well to make sure your presentation goes well, more practical actions you can take to help handle the stress when the psychology is not working so well. Here are a few of them.

1. Perspiring
One natural response to the stress that people feel before making a presentation is sweating. To prevent this from becoming a problem, make sure you have a few paper towels or even a small hand towel with you to surreptitiously dab your hands and forehead.

Avoid using tissues because they can fall apart and make an unsightly mess. Try not to wipe your sweaty hands on your clothes because you might leave a stain. Make sure you use a strong antiperspirant, and wear a dark shirt or dress so that any perspiration won’t show. If this is a particular problem for you, you may want to even bring another layer of clothing, such as a sweater, to cover the perspiration.

2. Stomach pain or growling
This is an unfortunate result of stress for some people. To preven it, eat bland foods before your presentation, and avoid dairy, fried foods or especially acidic foods about 12 to 24 hours before you speak.

3. Lightheadedness
This is also a problem for some people. If you are prone to this condition, take precautions. Make sure you have some sugar in your body. Also, when you get up to speak, rise slowly. Even better, stand up a few minutes before you speak if that is possible.

4. Drawing a blank
Again, sometimes because of anxiety, people simply forget what they are going to say when they rise to speak. Attempting to memorize your entire presentation won’t really help, as you might think. In fact, it might even increase your anxiety and make the situation even worse.

The thing to do is memorize just the first three lines of your presentation to help get you started. Then, make sure you have your key points written down, so that you can refer to them if needed.

How to Read an Interviewer’s Body Language

Interviews are stressful. That certainly is not news to anyone who has been in one. You need to always be conscious of what you are doing, not just what you are saying, but through your body language as well, to make sure you are making a good impression.

So, while your body language is important, it is just as important to be able to read the body language of the interviewer. This can give you vital clues as to whether you are scoring points or not, and so telling you if you need to change course or not.

Here are some body language clues to look for that should raise some red flags.

1. Raised eyebrows
When you are talking with someone, and they do this, it is usually a sign that you have said something that surprised them or said something that they find hard to believe. If you see the interviewer doing this, it is time to pause and think about what you are saying. Do you need to clarify your point or explain it more fully or offer more evidence?

2. No eye contact
If the interviewer has stopped making eye contact, it is a sign that he or she has lost interest in what you are saying. This is a signal that you need to make a course correction. Wrap up your answer more quickly, or change your strategy for answering the question.

3. Tapping on the desk or fidgeting
This is a sign that the interviewer is feeling some kind of time pressure, usually that he feels he is running out of time or getting close to the end of the interview. If you see this and know that there is not much time remaining, you can take advantage of the situation by making sure you get in any important points you want to make.

4. They discontinue taking notes
This is a sign that the interviewer not long finds your answer adequate or interesting. When you see this, it is time to change your approach to the question and try a different tack. Finish up what you are saying as quickly as you can and try something else.

Stay calm and maintain a positive attitude during the interview. Remember that often there is no right or wrong answer to many of the questions. The purpose of the question is often just to see how you think and express yourself or how original you are with your answers.

How to Use Productivity Triggers

Intention Implementation

The way to turn that intention into concrete action is to determine an exact time and place where you will put that intention into effect. This is the way to turn desire into achievement – having a when and where to carry it out. This when and where determination is what psychologists call an intention implementation.

Having a when and where in place is a kind of action trigger that links our intention with the behavior we want to perform. When we are at the predetermined time and place, the desired behavior is automatically triggered.

Studies Offer Support

More than 100 studies have shown that these implementation triggers greatly improve the chances of reaching a goal. It is a simple technique, but a powerful one nonetheless.

In one study, for example, a psychologist at a university asked students to write an essay during their Christmas break, describing what they did over the holidays. They had to mail the essay back to the psychologist no later than two days after Christmas.

He divided the students into two groups. Group one had to write down when and where they planned to work on the essay, while group two did not. What he found was that three-fourths of the students in group one completed the essay, while only one-third of those in group two completed the assignment.

It was the simple act of writing down the when and where – using the implementation trigger – that made all the difference. This simple action doubled the chances of the students achieving the goal.
