How to Stay Organized

June 29th, 2017

Getting organized and staying organized is always a challenge. People have various techniques they use to try and stay organized. But others find it more difficult to get things together. Here are a few ideas on how to stay organized from someone who gives advice about it professionally.

1. Give your to-do list purpose
Many people simply jot down tasks on their to-do lists as the tasks come into their heads. They do not really give it a lot of thought. But it takes some thinking and planning to put together a to-do list that will be helpful.

When putting together a to-do list, you need to have some criterion to assess your tasks, a way of deciding whether the task belongs on the to-do list in the first place. The list, remember, is a means to an end, as a way of helping you to achieve the goals of your job and your career.

You need to determine how urgent and important each task is, how much time it is likely to take, and then prioritize the tasks in order of importance. Moreover, you need to limit your list to a reasonable number of tasks. Too many, and chances are the ones at the bottom are likely never to be completed.

2. Look at what you are spending your time on
Occasionally, keep a record of how you spend your day. Then review it to get some idea of what you are spending your time on. You obviously want to use your time wisely. Do the tasks you spend the most time on help you advance toward your goals? If not, you need to make changes.

3. End your workday 15 minutes earlier.
Use the extra 15 minutes to reflect on your day and the decisions you made. Did you make the best use of your time? Were there things you could have done differently? Were you going in the direction you wanted to? Research has shown that taking the time to reflect on the workday enables you to actually become more productive by worker smarter.

4. Use electronic tools to help
These tools could be things like apps on the web or even something like a notebook and calendar, whatever can help you to stay organized.

Everyone is different, and you need to use the tool that works best for you. Don’t rely on what others do to stay organized. Develop your own system, one that works for you.

How to Read an Interviewer’s Body Language

June 22nd, 2017

Interviews are stressful. That certainly is not news to anyone who has been in one. You need to always be conscious of what you are doing, not just what you are saying, but through your body language as well, to make sure you are making a good impression.

So, while your body language is important, it is just as important to be able to read the body language of the interviewer. This can give you vital clues as to whether you are scoring points or not, and so telling you if you need to change course or not.

Here are some body language clues to look for that should raise some red flags.

1. Raised eyebrows
When you are talking with someone, and they do this, it is usually a sign that you have said something that surprised them or said something that they find hard to believe. If you see the interviewer doing this, it is time to pause and think about what you are saying. Do you need to clarify your point or explain it more fully or offer more evidence?

2. No eye contact
If the interviewer has stopped making eye contact, it is a sign that he or she has lost interest in what you are saying. This is a signal that you need to make a course correction. Wrap up your answer more quickly, or change your strategy for answering the question.

3. Tapping on the desk or fidgeting
This is a sign that the interviewer is feeling some kind of time pressure, usually that he feels he is running out of time or getting close to the end of the interview. If you see this and know that there is not much time remaining, you can take advantage of the situation by making sure you get in any important points you want to make.

4. They discontinue taking notes
This is a sign that the interviewer not long finds your answer adequate or interesting. When you see this, it is time to change your approach to the question and try a different tack. Finish up what you are saying as quickly as you can and try something else.

Stay calm and maintain a positive attitude during the interview. Remember that often there is no right or wrong answer to many of the questions. The purpose of the question is often just to see how you think and express yourself or how original you are with your answers.

If you make a misstep, recover from it as quickly as you can, and then forget about it. Focus your attention on the remainder of the interview.

If you need to get started on that job search project, begin by contacting Trinity Staffing. There is no better staffing agency in the San Antonio area, one that works with you to find a job that fits your skills and abilities. Give Trinity a call today.

How to Maintain Good Mental Health

June 15th, 2017

To perform at your best, you need to maintain good mental health. To do this, you often just need to follow some good common sense principles. However, there are some practices for good mental health that you may not be aware of. Here is a short list of ways to stay mentally healthy.

1. Stick to a routine
People do a lot better when they stick to regular schedules for eating and sleeping, and not so well when these are disturbed.

2. Watch what you eat
It all matters – everything you eat has an effect. For example, studies have shown that when people eliminate junk food from their diet, they are less prone to aggression and anxiety. Moreover, studies have shown that people who consumed fish oil while lowering their junk food intake also experienced fewer negative emotions.

3. Don’t overdo it
Watch that you don’t get carried away with any activity, be it work or play. Don’t be a workaholic or overdo it in the gym. The same goes with eating and drink. Moderation is the best behavior.

4. Watch the overuse of stimulants
Again, moderation is the watchword. Too much coffee, or smoking, or drugs and alcohol are obviously not good.

5. Stay in touch
Maintain your social contacts with friends and family. People who do are actually healthier, have a better outlook on life and live longer.

6. Play
It’s not just for kids. Have a hobby, play a sport, watch a movie, play a video game. Again, it contributes to good health, both mentally and physically.

7. Don’t get too caught up in social media
Some psychologists suggest accessing it no more than 15 a day. Studies have shown that it contributes to mental disorders among teens and young adults. But using it too much is not good for anyone.

And try not to use it immediately before going to bed because the blue light interferes with sleep patterns. You should discontinue use at least an hour before going to bed.

8. Choose wisely
When it comes to social events, you don’t have to go to every one that you can. Here again, you can overdo it.

The bottom line is make sure you eat enough, get enough sleep and exercise, and have enough leisure time.

How to Use Productivity Triggers

June 8th, 2017

Do you want to double your productivity in a short period of time? There is actually a simple way to do it.

Whether you want to write a presentation, create a client brief, or complete a project, everyone has goals that they have trouble achieving no matter how much they want to reach them. The reason is that desire, although necessary for achieving anything, just isn’t enough by itself.

Most of the time, people have the commitment to achieve a goal, but they still cannot seem to get there. That is because good intentions are not enough. They are no match for the distractions, temptations, and other emotions that constantly buffet us.

Intention Implementation

The way to turn that intention into concrete action is to determine an exact time and place where you will put that intention into effect. This is the way to turn desire into achievement – having a when and where to carry it out. This when and where determination is what psychologists call an intention implementation.

Having a when and where in place is a kind of action trigger that links our intention with the behavior we want to perform. When we are at the predetermined time and place, the desired behavior is automatically triggered.

Studies Offer Support

More than 100 studies have shown that these implementation triggers greatly improve the chances of reaching a goal. It is a simple technique, but a powerful one nonetheless.

In one study, for example, a psychologist at a university asked students to write an essay during their Christmas break, describing what they did over the holidays. They had to mail the essay back to the psychologist no later than two days after Christmas.

He divided the students into two groups. Group one had to write down when and where they planned to work on the essay, while group two did not. What he found was that three-fourths of the students in group one completed the essay, while only one-third of those in group two completed the assignment.

It was the simple act of writing down the when and where – using the implementation trigger – that made all the difference. This simple action doubled the chances of the students achieving the goal.

Some Motivation Tips

May 25th, 2017

From time to time, we all have trouble getting motivated. People develop various techniques to help themselves get working again. Here are a few more ideas to help yourself get started when you feel tired or lacking the energy to get moving.

1. Think about the future.
This is a good way to bring positive thoughts into the picture. The future is always filled with promise and possibility. Thinking about what you are going to accomplish always brings you energy levels up. Planning goals is always a motivator. But in addition to planning goals, you want to plan how you will achieve those goals as well.

2. Read something inspiring
This is another good way to get motivated. Reading about how someone else overcame adversity to achieve his or her goals always inspires you to work harder to achieve your own. Aphorisms are another good thing to read. Pithy and profound, they are great motivators as well. No less a person that Winston Churchill recommended aphorisms to help people to get moving.

3. Have a role model
This is a successful person whom you can talk to for advice and inspiration. He or she can tell you what he did to overcome the obstacles in his or her life. It is someone you can watch, emulate and learn from. Many companies have mentorship programs, which serve a similar purpose. Here, someone with more experience counsels younger employees to help them with their job and career. So, seek out a role model or a mentor.

4. As If
Behave as if you have achieved your goals. Behave as if you were someone who is motivated to get his or her work done. For example, if you want to improve your health, you might begin by psyching yourself up to go to the gym. But you can also behave as if you were already a healthy person who goes to the gym as a matter of course.

The great philosopher Aristotle knew about the power of acting as if. He said, “Men acquire a particular quality by acting in a particular way.” In other words, action comes before belief. It is the action which instills the belief.

5. Take some time off
Sometimes, we just need a little time away to rest and recharge. Then we can return to our work with increased motivation.

How to Write Better Cover Letters

May 18th, 2017

Why, you ask, are they not making it to your resume? It could be that they have read your cover letter and don’t want to see any more.

Is your cover letter doing what it should? Is it selling you to the employer, advertising what you can do for the organization? Maybe you are thinking that you should just not write one. But that is really cutting off your nose to spite your face. That just sends a signal to the employer that you are not interested enough in the job or industrious enough to write one.

So, how can you get the most out of your cover letter? Here are a few ideas.

1. Personalize your letter
You need to customize your letter for the particular organization you are applying to. Do not simply write one letter and change the address at the top for different employers.

If you have done your research on the organization, that should give you some idea of what the company is looking for, and this will help you to determine what approach to take, what kinds of things to emphasize.

2. Answer key questions
These are issues that are brought up in your resume but left unanswered there. For example, do you have a break in your work history? Your cover letter would be the place to address and explain this gap. Or maybe your qualifications do not align exactly with those mentioned in the job description. The cover letter would be the place to show how your qualifications make you the best person for the job.

Or there may be other things you want to include but did not want to take up space in the resume. Perhaps you want to highlight a hobby that relates to the job or that shows you have certain skills or traits that make you a good match. The cover letter would be the place to do this.

3. Don’t forget – proofread!
Look for spelling and grammar errors or awkward language. Have you explained things clearly enough? If your cover letter is sloppy and has errors, it does not reflect well on your attention to detail. You may want to give it to a friend or colleague to review and to get his or her input.

4. Follow instructions
Some organizations have certain format requirements for cover letters, or information they want included in the cover letter. Make sure you read and follow the instructions.

How to Make Your Workplace Stand Out to New Graduates

May 11th, 2017

If your company is trying to attract the best new graduates, what do you need to do? These graduates are part of the Millennial generation, and knowing what matters to them can help.

1. Provide training
Most companies provide some type of onboarding, but for Millennials, you need to do a little more, namely, helping them to develop their soft skills to enable them to succeed in the workplace. This is all part of providing development and growth opportunities, which is something Millennials value highly and are looking for from employers.

It is also a good idea to have some type of mentorship program for the new graduates. Again, this is the kind of thing they are looking for. Mentoring will help these younger people gain a better understanding of your organization and how it operates, as well as benefiting from someone with many years of experience.

2. Opportunities for advancement.
This is something else that Millennials value. They value communication and a lot of feedback on their performance. A recent survey of Millennials showed that 61 percent of those surveyed wanted more meetings with their supervisors. They look for coaching.

They want to join organizations that enable them to grow in their careers. Organizations can do this by providing things like networking opportunities, along with other training opportunities.

3. Flexibility
This is another thing that Millennials want. They like having flexibility as far as when they work and where they work. They want to be evaluated not just on the number hours they put in, but what they accomplish as well.

They are also looking for opportunities outside the workplace to establish relationships with their coworkers. These opportunities can be anything from meeting at a local pub to recreational activities.

In short, Millennials are looking for a good work/life balance and the opportunity to make an impact. So, while money is important to new graduates, developing and growing in their career, and doing meaningful work, are important to them as well.

Self-Explaining and Learning

May 4th, 2017

In today’s economy, one of the most important skills a person can have is the ability to learn. In fact, it is the ability to learn that has the most significant impact on a person’s future earnings. Companies everywhere pay employees for training and to take courses.

But knowing how to learn is a skill in itself, and that is something that is not addressed. One such effective learning strategy or skill is called self-explaining. It is literally the act of talking to yourself out loud and asking yourself questions.

For example, when you are reading something, you would ask yourself things like, “What does this mean,” and “Why is it important?” Research has shown that people who explain ideas to themselves out loud learn about three times more than people who do not.

Here are some tips on using the self-explaining method.

1. Talk to yourself out loud.
It is understandable if you are reluctant to talk to yourself. After all, it is generally perceived to be a sign of mental instability. But it is very helpful for learning. For one thing, it helps us to become more self-conscious about the learning process, to focus on how and what we are learning, how well we know the material, and what we may be confused about. It forces us to slow the pace a little, to step back and review to make sure we really know what we are reading.

2. Ask questions, especially why.
It is through asking questions like, “Do I really know this,” or “What is confusing about this,” that we get more of a handle on our learning process and help to improve it. Always asking “Why?” helps us to better learn as well, helping us to probe more deeply into a subject until we really understand it.

3. Summarize
To summarize, we need to put things in our own words, to explain things to ourself, and this helps us to better understand the material. Plus, by doing this, it helps you to remember the material better.

4. Connecting
When you are explaining things to yourself, you should be looking for connections, relationships between concepts as well. This also helps to better understand and remember.

Avoiding Mental Traps

April 27th, 2017

We all want to get ahead at work. But often what prevents our progress is not something external, but internal – our own mindset and attitude.

We develop mindsets that dampen our mood and motivation, that keep us from focusing on our tasks and giving them all the energy they deserve. Here are three such corrosive attitudes and what psychologists say we can do to change them.

1. Not letting go of the past.
We all have made our share of mistakes – made bad decisions, did things we shouldn’t have or did not do things we should have. But many cannot get past these things. They are filled with regret, remorse, or anger at them. They continually replay them in their mind, chewing on them continuously.

Regret, however, is a useless emotion. We need to move ahead. Certainly, we should learn from the past so we don’t repeat the same mistakes. But then it is time to let go. If we do not, we don’t fully engage with the present, and squander the only time that matters – now.

2. Accepting the truth.
Sometimes this is difficult to do. We easily see the flaws in others but are often blind to our own. But if we know the truth, we need to accept it, rather than turning a blind eye to it. Denial does not work either because eventually the truth will catch up.

We often miss the truth simply because we are not paying attention, according to psychologists. We are very aware of what we pay attention to, but unaware of the things we do not attend to. Psychologists say that we need to confront the pain and fear that we feel in order to combat them. We need to recognize that life is not meant to be easy, and there is no guarantee of safety and security for anyone.

3. Trying to change other people.
If you believe you can do this, you need to change your thinking here as well. When dealing with difficult people, you need to accept them for who they are, and to develop ways of working with them, or detaching from them.

Trinity Staffing offers the most comprehensive workforce services and solutions in the San Antonio area. We have the expertise and experience to find the right job for you. Give Trinity a call today.

How to Wake Up When You Need To

April 20th, 2017

Do you have trouble getting up for work? Do you find yourself constantly rushing in the morning because you never seem to have enough time? Or maybe you would like to get up earlier so that you can get more done in the morning, workout, for example.

If you are having difficulty getting up in the morning, here are a few ideas that may help.

1. Move your alarm away from the bed.
This is a simple little trick to help you get out of bed. It forces you to move, which also helps to wake you up. You cannot simply roll over and punch the snooze button, which research has shown is not a good idea anyway. You should avoid the snooze button.

Some more daring people even put obstacles between the bed and the alarm, which forces them to navigate through them. However, unless you really find this helpful, you need to be careful here because of the risk of injury.

2. Make the bed immediately
As soon as your turn off the alarm, your next move should be to make the bed. This will prevent you from crawling back into it again. Also, making your bed is a little act of self-discipline that helps you get your day off to a good start.

3. Apply cold water
Nothing wakes you up like the feel of cold water. You can simply splash some on your face, or if you feel adventurous, take a cold shower, which also has a number of health benefits.

You should drink a glass of water as well. During the night, your body becomes dehydrated, so a glass of water first thing in the morning is a good way to get hydrated and get your body functioning as it should.

4. Get some exercise
This is a great way to help you wake up because it gets your blood pumping. You can run or walk, do calisthenics, yoga, push ups and sit ups, or work out on an exercise machine.

5. Get enough sleep
This is probably the most important piece of advice to help you get up in the morning. Most Americans are sleep deprived. So naturally, if you are not getting enough sleep, it’s going to make it difficult to wake up. Not only that, you may find yourself nodding off during the day.

Most adults need around seven to eight hours of sleep a night.

If you are looking for work in the San Antonio area, Trinity Staffing will work with you to evaluate your unique skills and experience to find the right job for you. Call Trinity Staffing today.
